Delhi Government Hikes Minimum Wages by Up to ₹500 for All Workers
Overview:
In a significant move aimed at supporting the working class and addressing rising living costs, the Delhi government has revised the minimum wages for all categories of workers. The updated wage structure, effective from April 1, 2025, brings an increase of up to ₹500 per month and is expected to benefit thousands of laborers across the National Capital Territory.
Details of the Wage Revision:
Under the revised scheme:
- Unskilled workers: ₹18,456/month (↑ from ₹18,066)
- Semi-skilled workers: ₹20,371/month (↑ from ₹19,929)
- Skilled workers: ₹22,744/month (↑ from ₹22,411)
- Non-matriculate employees: ₹20,371/month
- Matriculate but non-graduate: ₹22,411/month
- Graduate and above: ₹24,356/month (↑ from ₹23,836)
This revision is part of the biannual adjustment under the Minimum Wages Act, which factors in changes in the cost-of-living index.
Objective and Government's Stand:
The Delhi government emphasized that the wage hike is to shield the most vulnerable sections of society from inflation. These increases are based on periodic, inflation-linked dearness allowances and reviewed twice a year.
The Aam Aadmi Party-led administration stated that Delhi offers the highest minimum wages in the country. Workers in Delhi’s unskilled category earn significantly more than those in other states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Enforcement and Worker Rights:
Workers earning less than the notified minimum wage can file claims with the appropriate authorities. The government has directed labor inspectors to ensure compliance and penalize defaulting employers.
This reflects Delhi’s commitment to social security and economic dignity for its workforce, aligned with its broader vision of inclusive growth and social welfare.
