Meluri Inaugurated as Nagaland’s 17th District, Marking a Milestone in Regional Development

On February 21, 2025, Meluri was officially inaugurated as the 17th district of Nagaland by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Formerly a sub-division under Phek district, its district status was formally notified on November 2, 2024. The inauguration took place at Meluri Public Ground with the presence of government officials, tribal leaders, and local residents.

Key Highlights

A ‘Land of Fortunes’

Chief Minister Rio described Meluri as the “Land of Fortunes”, highlighting its rich natural resources, cultural heritage, and biodiversity. He emphasized its tourism potential through sites like Shilloi Lake and the Tizu River, and reaffirmed support for the Tizu-Zungki Inland Waterway project to facilitate trade with Myanmar via the Chindwin River.

Community Focus

Rio commended the Pochury tribe for their historical resilience and state-building contributions. He acknowledged the efforts of the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) in advocating for district recognition and called for continued unity between the Chakhesang and Pochury communities.

Developmental Initiatives

As part of the ceremony, a multipurpose sports complex was inaugurated to promote youth development. The Chief Minister also discussed microfinance schemes offering loans up to ₹15 lakh without collateral, and assured availability of healthcare benefits through CMHIS and Ayushman Bharat.

Demographics and Administrative Scope

Meluri spans approximately 1,011 sq. km and comprises around 34 villages with a population of about 30,000. The region, mainly inhabited by the Pochury tribe, is known for its high literacy rate. The creation of this district aims to improve local governance and foster targeted development efforts.
